“Boris Brott is back … at the Vatican,” writes Karen Lindell Wednesday (5/1) in California’s Ventura County Star (subscription required). “The founding music director and conductor emeritus of the New West Symphony has been invited to conduct a concert for Pope Francis on May 8. The performance will feature two works by Cardinal Domenico Bartolucci, former director of the Sistine Chapel Choir: his ‘Magnificat’ and the world premiere of his ‘Requiem.’ … Brott, who stepped down as artistic director of New West in 2011 but still conducts in Canada and Europe, isn’t a papal premiere newbie. In 2000, he conducted the Vatican premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass with Pope John Paul II in the audience. (Brott was Bernstein’s assistant while he was writing the Mass.) The evening concert next week will take place in Paul VI Audience Hall, which is in both Vatican City and Italy and has a capacity of more than 10,000.”
