In Wednesday’s (5/15) Chicago Tribune, Heather Gillers writes, “Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to announce this morning that the city will give $1 million to Chicago Public Schools for arts education next year, double the amount he had originally promised when a city Arts Education Plan was unveiled in October. The mayor is expected to make the announcement alongside internationally-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma at a Chicago Children’s Choir concert in Millenium Park. The Chicago Public School Arts Education Plan grew out of the drafting of a citywide Chicago Cultural Plan, after residents who attended discussion groups around the city repeatedly listed arts education among their highest priorities. Emanuel said in October that an allocation of $1 million would be shared between the cultural plan and the arts education plan. The announcement Wednesday said additional money from the NATO Legacy Fund would be used to supplement the allocation, so that the Arts Education Plan alone would get a total of $1 million. Goals of the Arts Education Plan include giving elementary school students 120 minutes of art instruction a week and a renewed effort to offer arts instruction at every school.”
