In Sunday’s (5/19) Tulsa World (Oklahoma), James D. Watts Jr. writes, “New music, new conductors, a new way to experience Disney’s classic animated film ‘Fantasia’ and a special concert by singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant are some of the highlights of the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra’s 2013-2014 season. The season will feature a newly commissioned piece by composer Samuel Adler, along with an evening devoted to the music of Johannes Brahms and a concert programmed in part by suggestions for Tulsa Symphony audiences. ‘We spend a lot of time working out the season, trying to come up with concerts that work together, as well as separately,’ said Kari Caldwell, the orchestra’s principal cellist and president of its board. ‘We also try to get the best match between the conductor and the program.’ Since its founding seven years ago, the Tulsa Symphony has operated without a music director or resident conductor—a choice that emphasizes the orchestra’s unusual musician-led organization. … The main concert series begins Sept. 7, with an evening of music by Beethoven and Adler, in honor of the 15th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Tulsa’s Crescendo Awards. Adler’s Violin Concerto, which will feature 2009 Crescendo winner Siwoo Kim as soloist, was jointly commissioned by the Tulsa Symphony and the Rotary Club of Tulsa.”
