On May 24 at 9 p.m. and May 26 at 4 p.m., the Peoria Symphony Orchestra’s world premiere of Edward Joseph Collins’s opera Daughter of the South will be broadcast on Illinois public-television station WTVP. Also on May 24, the Cleveland Orchestra’s recent performance at St. Colman Church in Cleveland’s Gordon Square neighborhood will be broadcast on northeast Ohio station WVIZ/PBS at 9 p.m. on May 24. The Peoria Symphony broadcast features the orchestra’s October 2011 concert version of Collins’s opera, with orchestra and soloists led by Music Director George Stelluto. The 1939 work, a North-South love story set during the Civil War, had not previously received a full staging prior the Peoria performance; it incorporates jazz and blues and is described as being influenced by works of Strauss and Mahler. Collins (1886-1951), an Illinois native, also composed a symphony, two overtures, three piano concertos, and Hymn to the Earth for orchestra, choir, and solo voices, among other works. In the Cleveland Orchestra’s May 16 concert, led by Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Conductor James Feddeck, the orchestra performed Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture; Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony in D Major; Cécile Chaminade’s Flute Concertino in D Major, with Cleveland Orchestra Principal Flute Joshua Smith; Ravel’s Pavane for a Dead Princess; and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol.
