In Wednesday’s (5/29) Tallahassee Democrat (Florida), Mark Hinson writes, “The Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra’s new conductor is Darko Butorac, the last name is Serbian and sounds like ‘boot of rocks.’ Nearly everyone simply calls the young maestro Darko. He is 35, stands 6 foot 4 and loves to play basketball, possibly making him the only professional conductor of classical music in America who can slam-dunk a goal on the court. More importantly, though, ‘the musicians in the TSO really respond to him,’ TSO executive director Amanda Sauer said. ‘It is really nice to be coming into an organization where you are set up for success,’ Butorac said late Tuesday afternoon before he was officially introduced during a reception and press conference at the Women’s Club of Tallahassee in Los Robles. ‘I really felt a great connection with the orchestra here. It was spontaneous and immediate. I am excited.’ Butorac was the fifth of five conductor candidates who tried out during live concerts with the Tallahassee Symphony during 2012 and 2013. … Tallahassee will get its first official chance to see the new conductor in action when he picks up the baton for the season-opener concert on Oct. 19 in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall.”
