In Friday’s (6/21) San Diego Union-Tribune, Pam Kragen writes, “This evening, more than 30 bands and solo acts will fill the streets, shops and parks of Carlsbad Village with free performances of classical, modern, jazz, folk, rock, world and other music. The Village Walk is the realization of a dream that began more than a decade ago for Matt McBane, 34, who launched the Carlsbad Music Festival in 2003 to bring new music to his hometown. Back then, the composer/ violinist and fellow Carlsbad native Ben Jacobson had just graduated from USC’s Thornton School of Music and they wanted to forge a festival with a difference. ‘There were several classical musicians from Carlsbad doing interesting and adventurous things in contemporary music and we wanted to highlight that,’ said McBane. … Jacobson still lives in L.A., where he’s part of the famed Calder Quartet (which has played at the Carlsbad fest every year as ensemble-in-residence). … Tonight’s Village Walk, with 44 concerts scheduled from 5 to 10 p.m. in a dozen locations, will feature the most diverse lineup to date. It will open with a children’s gamelan ensemble concert in Magee Park, [and] will feature a San Diego Symphony bassist playing Bach in the St. Michael’s By the Sea chapel.”
