In a Friday (6/28) Associated Press report, Kate Brumback writes, “Off the field, NFL offensive lineman Justin Blalock is a strong supporter of music education. The Atlanta Falcons starting left guard has been an advocate for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and its music education efforts for the past year. The orchestra’s youth program hosted an intensive 4-day workshop culminating Thursday night with a side-by-side concert that had teenage music students playing alongside professional musicians. Blalock, who grew up playing the tuba, played alongside the students and professional musicians during the concert. Blalock says music education helps young people learn discipline, teamwork and other qualities that can help them succeed in life. Jere Flint, the music director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, says Blalock’s participation is encouraging for the teenage workshop participants.”
