The South Carolina Philharmonic, based in Columbia, will partner with seven area nonprofits—one for each concert program—in 2013-14 to raise awareness and help raise funds for their causes. The “Music for a Cause” 2013-14 partners are the American Red Cross, Children’s Trust of S.C., The Cooperative Ministry, Harvest Hope Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia, Pets, Inc., and SCOA Cares Foundation. The Philharmonic opens its season on October 4 with the world premiere of Joan Tower’s Bassoon Concerto and concludes on June 15 with its annual piano extravaganza at the Southeastern Piano Festival at the University of South Carolina. A second world premiere, a commissioned work by Columbia-based composer John Fitz Rogers, will take place in January. In April the orchestra will present a jazz-themed program in collaboration with the Columbia Museum of Art’s 2014 exhibit highlighting the Art Deco style of Japanese art; works to be performed include Three Film Scores by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, John Harbison’s Remembering Gatsby, Milhaud’s La création du monde, and Gershwin’s An American in Paris. This season marks the 50th year for the South Carolina Philharmonic, currently under the leadership of Music Director Morihiko Nakahara.
