Marlboro Music, the Vermont-based classical music retreat co-founded in 1951 by pianist Rudolf Serkin, opened its 63rd season on July 13 with the first of five concert weekends through August 11, with co-artistic director Richard Goode in residence. Co-artistic director Mitsuko Uchida is on sabbatical. This summer’s composer in residence is Krzysztof Penderecki, who is exploring three of his chamber works with Marlboro musicians. Among artists who will be at Marlboro this summer are Leon Fleisher, who will lead works by Hindemith and Stravinsky; baritone Thomas Allenwill, who will explore lieder repertoire; and current and former members of the Cleveland, Guarneri, Juilliard, Mendelssohn, Muir, and Vermeer quartets rehearsing a variety of chamber pieces. Concert programs at Marlboro—held Friday through Sunday and with repertoire chosen from approximately 250 works studied each summer by resident artists—are decided upon a week in advance of each concert.
