In Wednesday’s (7/17) Orange County Register (California), Timothy Mangan reports on the annual meeting on Monday of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. “The area’s premier presenter of classical music, a nonprofit, ended the fiscal year in the black. Revenue for the year, which included ticket sales as well as contributions, totaled some $3.9 million. Expenses, which included concert production, performers’ fees and education, wound up at a little more than $3.7 million. The Society thus ended up with a surplus for the year of $162,000, with net accumulated assets of nearly $700,000. All of the figures were unaudited.… The financial results were slightly lower than for the Society’s 2011-12 season, but the group presented fewer concerts in 2012-13. Ticket revenue—$1.089 million vs. $1.087—was virtually the same.… The Society did especially good business with its presentations of cellist Yo-Yo Ma at the Soka Performing Arts Center and violinist Itzhak Perlman at Segerstrom Concert Hall, both concerts sold out, with extra seating for the audiences required on stage. The Los Angeles Philharmonic performance conducted by [Gustavo] Dudamel at Segerstrom also sold out.” Mangan notes that 2013-14 will be the final season for Philharmonic Society Artistic Director Dean Corey. “A search has already begun for his replacement.”
