The Eastern Music Festival will perform the world premiere of Richard Danielpour’s A Prayer for Our Time on July 20 in Greensboro, N.C., led by Music Director Gerard Schwarz and featuring his son, cellist Julian Schwarz, as soloist. The premiere is the first to be performed as part of the festival’s Bonnie McElveen-Hunter Commissioning Project. For the project, over the course of ten seasons McElveen-Hunter—a philanthropist and former U.S. Ambassador to Finland who resides in Greensboro—and Schwarz are choosing ten American composers to write works for the festival, including John Corigliano, who is creating a work for the concertmaster Jeff Multer for the summer of 2014. Also on the July 20 program are Jean Sibelius’s Night Ride and Sunrise, Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor, and excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet.
