A memorial service for John Swallow will be held at the Music Shed at Connecticut’s Norfolk Chamber Music Festival on August 4 at 5 p.m. Swallow, who served on the faculty at the Yale School of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, Hartt School of Music, and Manhattan School of Music, died after a long illness on October 20, 2012. During his career he performed with orchestras including the Utah Symphony, Chicago Symphony, and as principal trombonist with the New York City Ballet Orchestra for more than 40 years. In 2002, he was the subject of a doctoral thesis by Brett Shuster, “John Swallow: A Study of his Life and Influence in the Trombone World” (Arizona State University). The August service at Norfolk will include tributes and performances, followed by a reception.
