New Jersey’s Princeton Symphony Orchestra has announced details of its 2013-14 season, which will open on October 6 with a concert featuring the PSO and the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra in Derek Bermel’s 2006 work Migration Series, a concerto for jazz band and orchestra based on images from painter Jacob Lawrence chronicling hardships and triumphs in the lives of black Americans. Led by Music Director Rossen Milanov, the program will also include Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Suite and Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite. As part of its opening weekend, the PSO is highlighting the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation with a family program, “Freedom Expressed!” That concert is part of the orchestra’s third annual Festival of Music and Art, and will include related activities throughout the day at the Princeton University Art Museum. Among the living composers represented in PSO’s remaining four classical series in 2013-14 are Aaron Jay Kernis, Oscar Navarro, and Julian Grant. The PSO also performs an annual holiday pops concert and Broadway pops concerts, as well as a chamber series.
