The Des Moines Symphony and Academy in Iowa reports that the total of gifts and pledges in its 75th-anniversary campaign begun in July 2011 is more than $9.8 million. All funds raised go toward the orchestra’s operating endowment. The campaign received more than $5.8 million in current gift pledges, $3.2 million in future estate pledges, and $725,000 in capital gift pledges. It is planned that the increased endowment will to fund two capital projects, including design and construction of an acoustical shell for performances in Des Moines Civic Center and renovations to the Symphony Academy’s performance and rehearsal spaces in its home at the Temple for the Performing Arts. The orchestra performs masterworks, pops, family concerts at the Des Moines Civic Center, as well as an annual July outdoor concert on the grounds of the Iowa State Capitol, which last year attracted more than 100,000 people. The Symphony Association also supports the Symphony Academy and its education programs, which include three youth orchestras.
