The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra reports that its home venue, Atlanta Symphony Hall, has undergone an acoustical renovation this summer, funded by an anonymous $500,000 donation. The new wooden acoustical shell, embracing the stage and providing enclosed walls and a ceiling, was designed by Auerbach, Pollock, Friedlander and Threshold Acoustics. On September 18, Music Director Robert Spano and the ASO began rehearsals in the renovated space for the season-opening concert, on September 26, which features Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3, Brahms’s Symphony No. 3, and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, with André Watts as soloist. In additional news from the ASO this week, the orchestra will partner with the DeKalb County Public Library to perform free hourlong, casual chamber concerts at six library branches and the Clarkston Community Center in 2013-14. The concerts are part of the ASO’s “Symphony In Your Neighborhood” initiative. At the Chamblee Library, the program will be presented in Spanish; there will be opportunities at all venues to interact with musicians. Through the partnership, library cardholders will have access to ticket offers for Atlanta Symphony concerts.
