The New West Symphony, based in Thousand Oaks, California, will give 100 free tickets to its season-opening concerts this weekend to workers furloughed or otherwise impacted by the government shutdown. The orchestra’s season-opening concert—a program of Beethoven, Bruch, Gershwin, Ginastera, and Piazzolla, led by Music Director Marcelo Lehninger—is set for Friday at Oxnard Performing Arts Center. The program will be performed later in the weekend in Thousand Oaks and Santa Monica. “While politics divide, music unites and it is the job of cultural institutions to do our part in reaching out to those in need. It is our way to give back,” said Executive Director Natalia Staneva. The orchestra is asking those who wish to receive the tickets to call 866-776-8400 and mention “government shutdown.”
