Following David Atherton’s departure as music director of San Diego’s Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra in June, “The institution has named four guest conductors for 2014, all of whom are potential candidates for the position,” writes James Chute in Friday’s (10/4) San Diego Union-Tribune. “They are: Nicholas McGegan, founder and director of San Francisco’s Philharmonic Baroque Orchestra; Michael Francis, chief conductor and artistic adviser to Sweden’s Norrköping Symphony Orchestra; Justin Brown, music director of the Alabama Symphony; and Carlos Miguel Prieto, music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Mexico and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería [as well as music director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the YOA Orchestra of the Americas]…. Nancy Laturno Bojanic, Mainly Mozart co-founder and executive director … said she and the board have no timetable regarding an appointment.” On four successive Saturdays this June, each of the four conductors will lead a concert at the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego. “In addition, Hernan Constantino, music director of the former San Diego Youth Artists Symphony, joins Mainly Mozart’s leadership team. Mainly Mozart absorbed the Young Artists Symphony earlier this year and renamed it the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra.”
