In Monday’s (10/7) Cincinnati Enquirer, Janelle Gelfand reports the death of conservatory administrator and composer Douglas Lowry on October 2 “after a battle with cancer.” He was 62. “Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September 2011, Mr. Lowry resigned as dean of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, N.Y., on Sept. 23. At that time, the University of Rochester’s board named him dean emeritus and awarded him with an honorary doctor of music degree.” Lowry had served as associate dean of the University of Southern California’s Flora L. Thornton School of Music, and from 2000 to 2007 was dean of the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where he was “a visionary in forming collaborations and engaging arts leaders. During his tenure, CCM launched a new relationship with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra to hold master classes, joint events and concerts.… A prolific composer, Mr. Lowry wrote music that was ‘always intelligently made,’ said Joel Hoffman, CCM professor of composition.… As dean at Eastman, Mr. Lowry led the biggest architectural transformation in the school’s history, completed in 2010.” A memorial service is planned for 3 pm on November 3 at Eastman, and the University of Rochester has established a Douglas Lowry Fund for Musical Excellence to which gifts in his memory may be directed.
