Following two years of Beethoven-themed celebrations during the month of November, New York radio station WQXR is in the midst of “Month of Mozart,” a curated series of themed programming, live events, and commentary this month, all related to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Events include a screening at Manhattan’s Symphony Space of the 1984 film Amadeus, which includes a conversation with actor F. Murray Abraham, who played Antonio Salieri in the movie; a version of The Magic Flute designed for children ages 4 to 12, performed live by Amore Opera at the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space at WQXR; and a live broadcast performance by the New York Philharmonic of Mozart’s three final symphonies. WQXR.org will post daily Mozart-themed videos, playlists, and quizzes; highlights include a guide to Mozart’s influence on pop musicians such as Nas, Ludacris, Def Leppard, and Neil Diamond, and a “Conducting Business” podcast addressing the controversy surrounding the “Mozart Effect” study. WQXR’s Operavore site will stream complete Mozart operas every weekday and on Wednesdays will feature Mozart operas exclusively.
