The Juilliard School and Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) have jointly announced the appointment of trumpeter WYNTON MARSALIS as director of jazz studies at Juilliard beginning July 1, 2014. Marsalis, the managing and artistic director of JALC and an alumnus of Juilliard, will oversee the jazz program’s spring 2014 auditions and admissions cycle and will spearhead planning for the evolution of the program’s curriculum. Juilliard and JALC have launched a new initiative designed to give Juilliard’s jazz students increased access to JALC’s education program, concert opportunities, and audience development projects. The new collaboration revitalizes the relationship between the two organizations, which began when jazz education was introduced at Juilliard in September 2001.
