The Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego announced that it has received a $50,000 bequest from the Joseph Kase, Jr. Revocable Trust, to benefit youth education programs of the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra. A second gift of $300,000, from two anonymous donors, will enable the organization to make investments in professional staffing and infrastructure, with an eye toward expanding community initiatives. Among those initiatives is the Youth Orchestra of the Californias/Orquesta Juvenil de los Californias, a joint venture announced in May between the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra and Tijuana’s Centro de Artes Musicales, across the border in Mexico. The bi-national ensemble comprises musicians from the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra and the Centro’s student orchestra. Among the MMYO performances planned for the 2013-14 season are a May Cinco de Mayo celebration by the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra at San Diego’s New Children’s Museum. Future concerts are also planned in Mexico, but dates have not been announced for this season.
