In the News-Press (Ft. Myers, Fla.) on Thursday (11/14), Charles Runnells writes, “Southwest Florida Symphony starts the season-long audition process Saturday for its new music director, and symphony leaders are well aware of what’s at stake. The right music director could do wonders for the symphony’s popularity and bottom line. … ‘It’s really the most important decision they make,’ said Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras. ‘It really is critical.’ ” On the podium for Saturday’s concert is Chelsea Tipton, music director of the Beaumont-based Symphony of Southeast Texas. Other music director candidates guest conducting the orchestra this season will be Guillermo Figueroa, music director of Colorado’s Music in the Mountains Festival and artistic director of the Figueroa Music and Arts Project in Albuquerque; David Commanday, artistic director of the Heartland Festival Orchestra in Illinois; Andreas Delfs, “who has served as music director of Opera Bern, Staatstheater Hannover, the Milwaukee Symphony and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra”; and Santa Barbara (Calif.) Symphony Music and Artistic Director Nir Kabaretti.
