The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra reports that its musicians and board have agreed to a two-year collective bargaining agreement covering the period September 1, 2013 to August 31, 2015. Under the agreement, the orchestra will continue to perform five concerts annually in New York while increasing the number of national and international tour dates. Included in the latter category are a residency at Colombia’s Cartagena Festival in January, a ten-concert Japan tour in February with pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, and a five-concert U.S. tour with violinist Ryu Goto. Also covered under the agreement are a planned Beethoven recording, the first in the orchestra’s history. In a press release, Executive Director Krishna Thiagarajan said, “I am pleased that by working with our musicians we have been able to make changes to the existing contract and are therefore able to increase by almost 50% the number of concerts being performed by Orpheus. Because Orpheus is a per-service orchestra, the increase in services results in a net gain to our musicians.”
