Nominations have been announced for the 56th annual Grammy Awards, which will be held in Los Angeles on January 26, 2014. Among U.S. orchestras nominated for Best Orchestral Performance are the Los Angeles Philharmonic, for Lutoslawski’s Symphony No. 1, led by Esa-Pekka Salonen; and the Minnesota Orchestra (Sibelius Symphony Nos. 1 and 4), led by Osmo Vänskä. Also nominated was the Albany (New York) Symphony for Best Classical Instrumental Solo, in Corigliano’s Conjurer: Concerto for Percussionist and String Orchestra, featuring Evelyn Glennie, on Naxos. The New York Philharmonic received two nominations for the same work, Lindberg’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with Yefim Bronfman: Best Classical Instrumental Solo and Best Contemporary Classical Composition. The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra received a nomination together with the Australian Chamber Orchestra in the Best Classical Vocal Solo category, for Winter Morning Walks—Dawn Upshaw, featuring music by Maria Schneider, Jay Anderson, Frank Kimbrough, and Scott Robinson.
