“The National Symphony Orchestra is opening a week of 50 free programs on Capitol Hill and in Washington’s H Street Northeast neighborhood,” reads an unsigned Tuesday (1/7) AP report. “Beginning Tuesday, the orchestra will offer performances throughout the week in small ensembles and three orchestral concerts at Union Station and at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. The ‘NSO In Your Neighborhood’ program begins with a joint performance Tuesday with young performers at the Shakespeare Theatre Company on Capitol Hill. Ensembles also will perform this week in schools, libraries, at the Rock and Roll Hotel on Wednesday night, and at the HR-57 jazz club Sunday night, among other places. The orchestra also will host musical instrument ‘petting zoos’ this week at Union Station, in a library, at a coffeehouse and at a homeless shelter.” The NSO’s “In Your Neighborhood” program began in in 2012 and emphasizes free chamber performances, education, and community engagement; last year the targeted neighborhood was U Street/Howard University/Shaw/Logan Circle.
