“Lang Lang, the internationally renowned classical pianist, will team up with the heavy-metal band Metallica at the 56th annual Grammy Awards ceremony scheduled to take place Jan. 26 at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles,” writes David Ng in Tuesday’s (1/7) Los Angeles Times. “The ceremony will be broadcast on CBS. Grammy organizers said Lang Lang will appear with Metallica in a special performance during the ceremony. They said Lang Lang continues to serve in his role as the Grammy’s cultural ambassador to China. No further details of the pianist’s performance with Metallica were released. Other Grammy performers announced on Tuesday include Stevie Wonder, Katy Perry, Lorde, Pharrell Williams and Nile Rogers. Lang Lang isn’t among this year’s Grammy nominees, but Metallica is for ‘Metallica Through the Never (Music From The Motion Picture),’ which is nominated for best recording package and other categories.… This won’t be the first time Lang Lang has performed at the Grammys. The pianist previously teamed up with jazz musician Herbie Hancock at the 2008 ceremony.” This year’s Grammy nominations were announced in December, with orchestral nominees including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Albany (New York) Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
