Thursday’s (1/9) Washington Post names seven individuals who will “change the city as we know it” in 2014. Among them is Deborah F. Rutter, recently named president of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and set to begin her post in September. “She’ll be overseeing a sweeping transformation of the performing arts complex that will add waterfront gardens and a video wall.… Rutter already attended the [Kennedy Center] Honors in December, going ‘incognito’ just days before the announcement of her hiring. This year should also bring the groundbreaking for the center’s $100 million expansion…. Rutter, who will continue to lead the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for several more months … says she’s looking forward to exploring the Eastern Shore and hiking. ‘My greatest passion in life is being outside, which has been thwarted in Chicago,’ she says. ‘I’m a true California girl.’ ” Among those also named in the Post’s 2014 list are Smithsonian American Art Museum curator Michael Mansfield; Bao Bao, the National Zoo’s new panda; and District Department of Transportation chief engineer Ronald “Nick” Nicholson.
