In California, six youth orchestras will perform at the annual Bay Area Youth Orchestra Festival at Davies Symphony Hall on January 19. The orchestras are California Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, El Camino Youth Symphony, Oakland Youth Orchestra, Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Young People’s Symphony Orchestra. The concert is a benefit for organizations that provide resources to underserved and homeless youth: Covenant House California, InnVision Shelter Network, Music in the Schools Foundation, Samaritan House, Students Rising Above, and BAYC. The Bay Area Youth Orchestra Festival has taken place annually since its inaugural year, 2009. Works to be performed at the benefit concert include Rossini’s Overture to William Tell, Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge (arranged for string orchestra), Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, Wagner’s Prelude to Act I of Die Meistersinger, Jennifer Higdon’s Blue Cathedral, Copland’s Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo, and portions of Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat.
