Michael Cooper writes in Wednesday’s (1/22) New York Times that the New York Philharmonic’s 2014-15 season will emphasize “new music and world premieres, and not just in the Contact! series of contemporary music…. There will be a week of film scores, and a festival devoted to Dvorák. And Avery Fisher Hall will once again be adapted to present a staged event: Arthur Honegger’s dramatic oratorio ‘Joan of Arc at the Stake’ ” with actress Marion Cotillard in the title role and featuring members of the Comédie-Française. “The subscription season will open with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 and the United States premiere of Unsuk Chin’s Clarinet Concerto…. The violinist Lisa Batiashvili … will perform not only Brahms, Barber and Bach but also Thierry Escaich’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe.… Mr. Gilbert will lead the orchestra in premieres of works by John Adams, Peter Eotvos and Christopher Rouse, its composer in residence… The orchestra will finish its multi-season survey of the six symphonies and three concertos of the Danish composer Carl Nielsen…. The Philharmonic plans a European tour in the spring of 2015 that will take Giants Are Small’s reimagining of Stravinsky’s ‘Petrushka’ … to London and Paris.”
