In Sunday’s (1/26) Detroit Free Press, Mark Stryker writes about the 2014-15 season at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Music Director Leonard Slatkin. “There’s a three-week midwinter festival devoted to Tchaikovsky, a concert performance of Puccini’s ‘Tosca’ and a significant dose of contemporary music, including works by Americans William Bolcom, Michael Daugherty, John Corigliano and Andre Previn.… [Slatkin has] created a thematic thread linking the entire season, ‘Concerto in America,’ a celebration of pieces for soloist and orchestra first performed in the U.S. … Some 23% of the music on the docket [during the season] is by American composers,” including Previn’s Double Concerto for Violin and Cello and Slatkin’s own “Endgames.” Also planned are performances of music by Augusta Read Thomas, Arvo Part, George Walker, and Cindy McTee, who is married to Slatkin. “Gabriela Lena Frank eases into a two-year stint as resident composer with education activities and a performance of ‘Concertino Cusqueno,’ though she’ll have a larger presence on the classical series in her second season.” In separate news from the Detroit Symphony, DSO musicians recently staged a flashmob at an Ikea in Canton, Michigan; the town is a new performance location for the DSO’s Neighborhood Concert Series.
