The Orchestra of St. Luke’s, based in New York City, has announced a “modest surplus on its $7.1 million budget” for fiscal year 2013, ended on August 31. The orchestra reported nearly $4 million in donations from individuals, foundations, and government agencies, to support a variety of projects such as its education initiatives: the longtime Free School Concerts series and the newly launched Youth Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Also reported for FY13 was a 22 percent increase in earned revenue from performances at venues including New York’s Carnegie Hall and Morgan Library & Museum, and at the University of North Carolina, where it participated in The Rite of Spring at 100 with puppeteer Basil Twist. In 2014 the orchestra reports that its fundraising focus will be the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, which opened in 2011 and provides low-cost rehearsal space for arts and nonprofit groups. To date, the orchestra has raised $29.7 million toward DiMenna Center building costs; the orchestra says it aims to raise an additional $7 million to pay off the mortgage by 2019.
