“The Pittsburgh Symphony will play 20 weeks of classical subscription concerts in the 2014-15 season,” writes Mark Kanny in Wednesday’s (2/5) Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “Half will be led by music director Manfred Honeck. The season will feature the first returning composer of the year, Mason Bates … and commissioned works for symphony principal players” by Jake Heggie (cellist Anne Martindale Williams), Alan Fletcher (oboist Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida), and David Ludwig (bassoonist Nancy Goeres). Works to be performed and recorded in 2014-15 include Beethoven’s fifth and seventh symphonies, Bruckner’s seventh symphony, and Tchaikovsky’s sixth symphony. “Honeck’s new arrangement of a suite from Antonin Dvorak’s opera ‘Rusalka’ will be played…. ‘When Mason Bates was our composer of the year [in 2012-13], we got a reaction from our audience unlike any we’d had before…. There was a very strong desire for more of Mason Bates,’ [vice president for artistic planning Bob] Moir says. Bates’ music will be played on the first subscription concert and on Jan. 23 to 27, March 27 to 29, and May 15 to 17. … The Disney film ‘Fantasia’ will be shown with live performance of its classical music soundtrack.”
