“In the course of a year, the Greenville Symphony Orchestra sends small music ensembles into every elementary school in Greenville County,” writes Paul Hyde in Tuesday’s (2/25) Greenville News (South Carolina). “The educational program is made possible, in part, by grants from Greenville’s Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC). ‘The program funding we receive from MAC is invaluable,’ said Bill Johnson, the orchestra’s executive director. MAC’s annual support for local arts organizations could triple in the next decade, thanks to a $25 million endowment campaign announced Monday…. The endowment would likely generate $1 million annually in income to be disbursed to arts groups in Greenville County, [MAC director Alan] Ethridge said…. MAC hopes to raise the $25 million in five to seven years…. The Greenville Symphony, in addition to its educational programs in the schools, uses MAC funds to present up to 18 Lollipops concerts at local libraries for children, ages 3 to 7…. MAC is funded by individuals, corporations, foundations, the city of Greenville’s accommodations tax, the South Carolina Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Much of the money raised by MAC provided grants to 52 arts organizations and 22 individual artists in Greenville County.”
