April 7 is deadline to apply for the 2014 American Prize awards, given annually to orchestras, choruses, bands, opera and musical theater companies, and their conductors and administrators. The awards, to be announced in the fall, include cash prizes up to $500 and are given based on evaluation of commercial and noncommercial CDs and DVD recordings. The American Prize, founded in 2009 by composer/conductor/playwright David Katz and based in Danbury, Connecticut, gives orchestra awards in five categories: professional orchestra, community or faith-based orchestra, college/university orchestra, secondary-school orchestra, and youth orchestra.
