The Board of Directors of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) has elected composer ALEX SHAPIRO to fill the Symphony & Concert seat held by STEPHEN PAULUS, who is unable to serve the remainder of his term for health reasons. (Paulus suffered a stroke last July at the age of 63.) Shapiro has served as an advocate for composers and other members of ASCAP through her work on its Symphony & Concert Committee and with a variety of other organizations. Shapiro’s music, published by her company Activist Music, can be found on more than 20 commercially released CDs. It includes acoustic and electroacoustic works for chamber ensemble and symphonic wind band, and she is considered a pioneer in the application of digital media in composition, and for innovative uses of social networks.
