The Center for Arts Leadership at the University of Houston has announced that it will host its 2014 Leadership in the Arts Summit on April 4 and 5, “What does it take to be a 21st-century arts community?” The summit will focus on how increasing competition for audiences and new demographics are redefining rules for artists and arts organizations in Houston. Featured speakers will include economist Ann Markusen, author of The Arts, Consumption, and Innovation in Regional Development; Maria Rosario-Jackson, senior adviser to the Arts and Culture Program at the Kresge Foundation; and Paul Bonin-Rodriguez, author of the forthcoming book Performing Policy: How Politics and Cultural Programs Redefined U.S. Artists for the Twenty-first Century. Topics also include trends in funding and philanthropy, arts advocacy, and community/place-based arts practice.
