The Wichita (Kans.) Symphony has appointed MICHAEL HANAWALT director of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra Chorus. He succeeds CECIL J. RINEY, who has retired from the post following 21 years of service. Hanawalt is director of choral activities at Wichita State University, where he conducts the Concert Chorale and Women’s Glee Club and teaches conducting and choral literature. He was formerly visiting instructor in music at St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minn.) and conductor of its Chapel Choir and Viking Chorus. His choral arrangements are published by Boosey & Hawkes and Niel A. Kjos Music Company. Hanawalt received a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance from St. Olaf College, a Master of Music in choral conducting from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in choral music education from Florida State University.
