The Grand Junction Symphony in Colorado has received a $2,500 grant from the Bessie Minor Swift Foundation to expand its Symphony Storytime program, run in partnership with Mesa County Public Libraries. In the program, inaugurated in fall 2013, members of the orchestra read stories to elementary-school children, incorporating music into the stories, and each storytime concludes with an instrument petting zoo. This season the program included three presentations: one focusing on string instruments, a second on brass and woodwind instruments, and a third on percussion. The grant funds will be used in 2014-15 to add more presentations and Mesa County libraries, as well as more musicians participating in each event.
