Avner Dorman, in his first season as music director of Ohio’s CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra,  will conduct the world premiere of his own Violin Concerto No. 2 (“Nigunim: Hebrew Melodies”) on May 23, with Gil Shaham as soloist. The work is based on Jewish traditions from throughout the world, including North Africa and Central Asia, and incorporates Klezmer music, Georgian folk rhythms and harmonies, Macedonian dances, and Ashkenazy prayers. Dorman made his debut leading CityMusic Cleveland in April 2013, when he conducted his own Uzu and Muzu from Kakaruzu, a work originally commissioned and premiered in 2012 by the Stockton Symphony in California. Dorman’s works have been performed by orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Israel and Munich philharmonic orchestras.
