“After conducting a national search, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra announced Thursday that it has selected David Crane as its new executive director,” writes Cameron Austin in Thursday’s (5/22) Roanoke Times (Virginia). “Crane currently serves as general manager of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in New York, where he has worked since November 2012. A Botetourt County native, Crane returns to the area with more than 16 years of arts management experience. In addition to the Buffalo orchestra, he has held positions at the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor’s degree in music. Crane replaces Beth Pline, who announced in November that she would step down after seven years, citing health reasons. According to tax records, Pline earned an $81,000 salary as RSO director. Crane will officially take over management of the orchestra’s administrative staff on June 30. ‘The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra is a cornerstone of cultural life in Southwest Virginia,’ Crane said in a news release. ‘It is a huge honor for me to become its Executive Director.’ The RSO’s 2014-2015 season will begin Aug. 24 with a concert in the newly renovated Elmwood Park amphitheater.”
