“As the Baltimore Symphony’s 2016 centennial approaches, the orchestra will commission 10 composers to write encores of two or three minutes each,” writes Tim Smith in Wednesday’s (5/28) Baltimore Sun. “Adding a twist to the project, the public is invited to submit ideas to help inspire those composers. The ideas, expressed in 100 words or less, can address ‘musical style, or could feature a particular instrument, local icon, location or historical figure,’ according to the press release issued Wednesday. If your idea is accepted, you will be invited to the premiere of the encore it inspired and will receive a signed copy of the score. No word yet on who the 10 composers will be, but the BSO promises, as you might expect, that they are all ‘internationally renowned.’ The encores will be performed during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 seasons.” The deadline for submitting encore ideas is June 30 at 5 p.m. at bsomusic.org/encores.
