Sultans of String, the Toronto-based all-string ensemble headed by Canadian six-string violinist Chris McKhool, has won a Sirius XM Indie Award in the “World Group of the Year” category for their 2013 album Symphony, which includes elements of Spanish flamenco, Cuban rhythms, Celtic music, and jazz. The awards are made annually at a ceremony in Toronto, held this year on May 10; previous recipients of the award include Taylor Swift, Tom Waits, Adele, Alex Cuba, and Arcade Fire. The four other members of Sultans of String, in addition to McKhool, are flamenco guitarists Kevin Laliberté and Eddie Paton, bassist Drew Birston, and percussionist Chendy Leon. The group tours a pops show developed under the direction of John Morris Russell, conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and scored by composer/arranger Rebecca Pellett. The group has also made three other recordings: Luna (2007); Yalla Yalla (2009); and MOVE (2011).
