An editorial in Saturday’s (5/7) Gadsden Times (Alabama) praises the Etowah Youth Orchestras: “Consider this: An orchestra or members of its ensembles, through the years, travels to Carnegie Hall in New York City (two appearances); the Lincoln Center in New York City; the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; Manston and Stratford-Upon-Avon in England; San Jose, San Ramon, Orotina and Jaco in Costa Rica; Chicago; St. Louis; New Orleans; Philadelphia; New Haven; and Boston. In 22 years, the orchestra has performed world premieres of music by an equal number of composers. It has won heaps of awards, has been part of two documentaries, has performed with Grammy winners.… All of these accolades and more belong to the Etowah Youth Orchestras, founded in 1990 in Gadsden. Music director and conductor Michael Gagliardo joined the program in 1995.… Right now, 17 members of the EYO’s top ensembles are in the midst of a week-long tour of Puerto Rico that will include performances, a service project and sightseeing. Members of the EYO’s Puerto Rico Ensemble will perform in San Juan and Guayanilla, and will participate in a service project and an educational concert for children in two orphanages in Ponce, Gagilardo said.”
