In Saturday’s (5/7) Arizona Daily Star, Kathy Allen reports, “The 2014 Lumies Arts & Business Awards were presented at a celebration Friday night at the Tucson Museum of Art.… The awards, presented to artists, art patrons and art educators, are given to contributors to the Old Pueblo’s rich creative life. There were 41 nominees in the 10 categories for the Tucson Pima Arts Council honor. Nominations are open to the public and a panel of judges chooses winners.” The award for Arts Education Program was given to the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, “which has an extensive education program that reaches more than 25,000 students and teachers a year. Among those are the Music in the Schools program, concerts for preschoolers and a workshop program for middle and high school bands and orchestras.” Other awardees included Julie Gallego, founder of Ballet Folklorico San Juan, who has taught Tucson youth about folklorico dance and Mexican culture; The Loft Cinema, which has kept art cinema alive and well in the Old Pueblo; and Karen Falkenstrom, co-founder of Kore Press, Tucson’s first women’s press, and outreach and production director of Okaiko Sonora, which performs and educates about Japanese ensemble drumming.
