The Arapahoe Philharmonic, based in Littleton, Colorado, has announced the Vincent C. LaGuardia, Jr. Composition Competition for U.S. composers under 35 years old not regularly employed professionally as composers. The deadline to apply is July 1, 2014. The winning composer will become Arapahoe’s composer-in-residence for two seasons, during which the orchestra will premiere at least one work per season by the composer. Three finalists’ works will be performed at an open rehearsal on August 12, where competition judges and orchestra members will select the winner in conjunction with input from audience members. The Arapahoe Philharmonic, founded in 1953 and comprising primarily volunteer musicians, performs concerts under Music Director Devin Patrick Hughes at Mission Hills Church in Littleton as well as children’s concerts and programs in area schools.
