Chicago Chamber Musicians to cease operations on August 31

In Sunday’s (6/29) Chicago Tribune, John von Rhein reports, “The Chicago Chamber Musicians will discontinue artistic operations at the close of the organization’s fiscal 2014 on Aug. 31 and will not present a 2014-15 season, the ensemble announced in a statement released over the weekend. The news came as no surprise given the fact that the 28-year-old group, once recognized as the flagship of Chicago chamber music ensembles, had been battling audience decline and growing deficits over the last several seasons. A tentative move on the part of group members to take over operations from the current management and board never materialized. Board chair Michael Woolever said in a statement that ‘numerous factors have made it more and more difficult for CCM to avoid operational deficits in recent years, and leadership decided to take a prudent approach and suspend artistic operations while we continue to be solvent.’ ”
