In Monday’s (6/30) Bellingham Herald (Washington), Robert Lynch, chairman of the board of the Bellingham Festival of Music, writes about this year’s festival, which takes place during the first three weeks of July. “Each year the festival organizes … programs that focus on bringing classical music to children and adults throughout Whatcom County.” This summer, Spanish guitarist Pablo Villegas brings his Music Without Borders Legacy program, which aims “to leverage the inspirational power of classical music to bridge communities…. Villegas will present his program entirely in Spanish to about 50 children from our local Spanish-speaking community, including children of farmworkers.” The summer festival also includes master classes for students with Villegas and flutist Christina Smith. “The most ambitious program the Bellingham Festival of Music sponsors is in partnership with the Whatcom Symphony and the Colburn Conservatory of Music. Musicians from Colburn, one of the most prestigious music conservatories in the U.S., come to Bellingham and perform for middle and high school students throughout Whatcom County. This past spring, the Second Street Brass Quintet performed before more than 3,000 children in their schools, giving a recital and engaging the children in discussions about music and being musicians.”
