On July 1 at Ohio’s University of Dayton Kennedy Union Ballroom, 40 musicians from the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra joined 85 musicians from Augsburg, Germany’s St. Stephan’s Youth Orchestra for a concert marking 50 years since Dayton and Augsburg became sister cities. St. Stephan’s Youth Orchestra Conductor Ulrich Graba led the concert, which featured music by Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Johann Strauss, and John Philip Sousa. “We are thrilled to host the St. Stephan’s Youth Orchestra in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Dayton-Augsburg Sister City relationship,” said DPYO conductor Patrick Reynolds. The Dayton City Commission in 1964 established Augsburg, Germany as the first sister city of Dayton, whose goal is to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation. Since 1964, the Dayton Sister City Committee has conducted adult professional and tourist exchanges as well as youth exchanges. The German youth orchestra is in the midst of a U.S. tour that also includes stops in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York.
