In the Sun Herald (Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss.) on Monday (7/7), Cecily Cummings reports, “The Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra announced and introduced its new interim music director during a press conference on Monday morning at Biloxi Saenger Theatre. ‘To ensure that our goal of excellence is maintained during this period of transition, we have contracted with one of the most respected maestros in the southern United States, Maestro Peter Rubardt,’ said Dobbs Dennis, Gulf Coast Symphony secretary.” Rubardt, a native of Berkeley, Calif., with a doctoral degree in orchestral conducting from the Juilliard School, is in his seventeenth season as music director of Florida’s Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, and was recently named music director of the Meridian (Miss.) Symphony Orchestra. “ ‘Dr. Rubardt is enjoying his second season with the Meridian Symphony Orchestra, and with that Mississippi connection, he is now one of us,’ Dennis said.” Cummings reports that Rubardt “has increased attendance, broadened the orchestra’s activities and built a large base of support” in both Pensacola and Meridian.
