“Not that they needed sprucing up, but the grounds at Tanglewood got a little more charming Monday as a sculpture of celebrated composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein (1918-90) was installed at the BSO’s Berkshires abode,” reads an unsigned article in Tuesday’s (7/29) Boston Globe. “The sculpture by New England-based artist Penelope Jencks was unveiled during an afternoon ceremony attended by Jencks, composer John Williams, Bernstein’s daughter Nina, Kim Taylor, Stephanie Blythe, and Nancy and Ann Fitzpatrick. Bernstein’s connections to Tanglewood were many. Not only did he lead the Boston Symphony Orchestra (and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra) in many memorable performances, he also worked with Tanglewood founder Serge Koussevitzky—BSO music director from 1925-49—as a conducting fellow in 1940 as part of the first class of the Tanglewood Music Center, the BSO’s prestigious summer music academy. This is the second in a series of sculptures planned for display on the Tanglewood grounds. The first was a bust by Jencks of composer Aaron Copland, which is located in the gardens behind the Tappan Manor House. The Bernstein sculpture will be placed in the entryway of the Highwood Manor House.”
